Baikal CS Paintjob

Baikal CS Paintjob (59)

Clean and pretty, before we start to work.

This car will be receiving a complete exterior respray and redo over the next 2-3 months. Pix to document work and findings. Overall a very sound SoCal ’71 2800CS that has had all the correct mechanical and interior things done to it, by way of upgrade brakes and suspension, new leather, German carpet.

The paint however is quite old, probably 20 years so, and beginning to show it’s age. Stripping the paint reveals that the primer was lacquer type, so the color coat was lacquer. 10/21/06 Bodywork beginning and the various ‘October Surprises’ are found and fixed. 11/10. Bodywork essentially done, and car in primer.

A week or two of air drying will help the primer get hard before preparation for the final color. Now need to make sure the color is correct and lay the paint. 12/14. Paint is going on now to the engine bay and under the trunk and hood. Color looks good. 12/20. Color is on and drying.

Reassembly will follow a short rest for the holiday. 1/13/07 Reassembly well under way. Glass in and trim and bumpers on. 2/10/07 90% done. Needs a sunroof filter custom made and minor reassembly. Ready for transport to it’s new home very soon. 3/29/07 A change of wheels and some finishd shots. A bit of mechanical freshening–chattering clutch–and some detail trouble shooting. Anticipated delivery date 4/18.
