One of the reasons for CS rust is the way the bodies are assembled. Lots of smallish pieces of stamped metal tack welded together. Between the spot welds are spaces and cavities just ideal for the ‘metal mite’ to take hold.
This reinforcement technique was copied from the BMW Motorsport division. When I was able to examine an original E9 racer years back–aside from removing a few of the metal bits needed to support seats and street items, this is how they added strength to the otherwise pretty flimsy CSL tub.
The subject car here is actually a pretty clean SoCal CS with nice floors as seen and pretty nice fenders and nose. We have taken the floors and structure down to the metal and have exposed the metal subassemblies prior to reinforcement and repair.
After improving the welds, now will need to clean carefully and seal things, then finish rustproof the floor before proceeding. This technique goes a long way towards making the coupe monococque a more durable assembly.
